Set aside time to complete the form in one sitting - approximately one hour
Prepare longer answers in a separate document, then copy and paste them into the form (This helps avoid losing work due to internet issues or accidental navigation)
This short form is designed for us to get to know you and your interests. Please do not worry about any typos or potential mistakes as we aim to review all applications in an open, inclusive manner. If invited to interview, you will be asked if you require any reasonable adjustments to successfully attend your interview.
Please note that there is a strict character limit on the experience and interest questions. Applicants will have an opportunity to review and edit their application before submitting, using the back button at the bottom left of the form. Do not use your browser’s back button, as this may cause data loss.
Please complete all sections of the application form.

Deadline for this application submission is 12th January 2026 at 17:00 (GMT).
Once you have submitted your online application form the next stages are as follows:
- In January we will shortlist candidates for interview. We aim to inform everyone about the outcome of the shortlisting towards the end of January.
- Interviews for shortlisted candidates will take place around mid February. These will take place online. Detailed information on interviews will be released for shortlisted candidates in due time.
- Shortlisted candidates will be given more information on available PhD projects. Candidates who we wish to make an offer after interview will receive support to discuss projects with potential supervisors across UCL and Imperial.
- A final offer for CDT entry will be generated once
- A project is agreed with a suitable UCL or Imperial advisor in one of the research areas supported by the CDT.
- A pro-forma application to either UCL or Imperial (depending on supervisor), including full references, has been approved. This pro-forma application mainly serves to do a formal document check and to confirm eligibility of candidates for funding by the respective university.
Eligible PhD projects are broadly across the computational sciences, data sciences, and research software engineering. While most of our students have projects across mathematics, statistics, and computer science, we also support students in other departments (e.g. Chemistry, Medicine), as long as the projects fall within the remit of the CDT. Please note that many of our funded places come with restrictions on choice of university department or topic area. We will try to support the preferred research area of each candidate we wish to make an offer. But funding arrangements can mean that not every choice of preferred supervisor or project will be possible.
